The government has created a program subsidizing phone services for low income individuals. The program offers free phones and phone service.
Who qualifies for free phones and free cell phone service?
In order to qualify to participate in the Lifeline program, the following criteria must be met:
Applicant must be located in the United States. The program is available in every state, commonwealth, territory and on Tribal lands.
Applicant must have an income that is at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guideline, OR participate in one of the following federal assistance programs:
- SNAP (food stamps)
- Supplemental Security Income
- Federal Public Housing Assistance
- Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit
- Tribal Programs
Applicant can have only 1 Lifeline subsidy per household, but the benefit can be transferred between providers.
Applicant can either use the subsidy to receive help with his/her home phone, cell phone OR high-speed broadband internet service.
